Pupil Parliament

At Valley Invicta Primary School at Aylesford, pupil voice plays an instrumental role in shaping our school community. Our Pupil Parliament provides a structured and meaningful way for pupils to contribute to school life, develop leadership skills and represent the views of their peers.

The Pupil Parliament enables pupils to take an active role in decision-making and school improvement. Through this system, pupils learn about democratic participation, responsibility and citizenship while helping to make a positive difference within the school community.

The Pupil Parliament forms an important part of our wider Personal Development provision, supporting pupils to develop confidence, leadership and an understanding of how they can contribute positively to their school and wider society.

Structure of the Pupil Parliament

The Pupil Parliament is made up of representatives from across the school.

  • Each year group, from Year 2 to Year 6, elects three representatives to serve in the Pupil Parliament
  • A Year 6 President (Prime Minister) is elected by the pupils to lead the Parliament
  • Pupils are chosen through a democratic voting process, ensuring that all pupils have a voice in selecting their representatives

Pupil representatives gather ideas and feedback from their classmates, discuss priorities and work together to develop suggestions that support improvements across the school.

The full Pupil Parliament meets at least once each term and regularly meets with the Headteacher to share ideas, feedback and recommendations.

Pupil Parliament Committees

To ensure that pupil voice contributes meaningfully to key areas of school life, the Pupil Parliament operates through a number of committees. These committees allow pupils to focus on specific aspects of the school and lead initiatives that benefit the whole community.

Safeguarding Committee

The Safeguarding Committee helps ensure that pupils feel safe, supported and confident in school.

Pupils in this committee:

  • Discuss issues related to pupil safety and wellbeing
  • Gather pupil views about how safe pupils feel in school and online
  • Contribute ideas to support safeguarding awareness
  • Support initiatives that promote positive wellbeing and safe behaviours

Members of the committee also have opportunities to share pupil perspectives within wider trust safeguarding discussions.

Teaching for Learning Committee

The Teaching for Learning Committee focuses on how pupils experience learning in the classroom.

Through this committee, pupils:

  • Share feedback about their learning experiences
  • Support leaders in understanding what helps pupils learn most effectively
  • Take part in learning walks with subject leaders
  • Help develop strategies that support effective learning across the school

This allows pupils to play a role in shaping teaching and learning within the school.

Eco Committee

The Eco Committee leads initiatives that help the school care for the environment and promote sustainability.

Pupils in this committee:

  • Lead environmental initiatives and sustainability projects
  • Promote awareness of environmental responsibility across the school
  • Support activities such as recycling, litter reduction and conservation
  • Encourage pupils to think about how their actions can positively impact the environment

Through this work, pupils develop a strong sense of responsibility for their school and the wider world.

How Pupil Parliament Works

To ensure that pupil voice has a meaningful impact, the Pupil Parliament follows a clear process:

  • Pupil representatives gather views and ideas from their classmates
  • Committees meet regularly to discuss priorities and plan actions
  • Key points and recommendations are shared with school leaders
  • Outcomes and actions are communicated back to pupils through assemblies and class discussions

This approach ensures that pupil voice is heard and that pupils can see how their ideas contribute to improvements across the school.

Developing Leadership and Citizenship

Through participation in the Pupil Parliament, pupils develop important life skills including:

  • leadership and teamwork
  • communication and listening skills
  • responsibility and independence
  • confidence in expressing ideas and opinions
  • understanding of democracy and citizenship

These experiences help pupils to recognise that their voice matters and that they can make a positive contribution to their community.

Making a Difference

The Pupil Parliament plays an active role in shaping school life at Valley Invicta Primary School at Aylesford. By working together with staff and pupils across the school, pupil leaders help to ensure that our school continues to be a positive, inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.

Through this system, pupils learn that leadership is about listening to others, working collaboratively and taking action to make a difference.
